A gentleman from Geneva arrived last week with a phone from 2019. Excellent condition. Still functional. He tried to play baccarat at the casino app. The game wouldn't load.
He tried on his tablet. It worked. He tried on a newer phone. It worked.
The problem wasn't the casino. It was his device.
Hardware Limitations
Modern casino games are built for modern phones. A 2024 game assumes a processor from 2023 or 2022. It assumes 4GB of RAM or more. It assumes a screen resolution of at least 1080p.
A phone from 2019 might have 2GB of RAM. It might have a processor that's significantly slower. The game is simply too demanding.
Think of it as a restaurant seating customers in a dining room designed for people of average height. A gentleman who is exceptionally tall finds the ceiling too low. The restaurant didn't change. He changed.
Software Compatibility
Casino games run on top of operating systems. iOS. Android. These systems get updated. Each update adds features and requirements.
A game built for iOS 16 might use features that iOS 13 doesn't have. Or it might require a security patch that older phones don't receive.
Manufacturers stop updating older phones. A phone from 2019 stopped receiving OS updates in 2022. It's locked in the past.
The Graph Processing Unit
Modern slots have graphics. Animations. These require GPU (graphics processing) power. Older phones have weaker GPUs.
The game tries to render a complex animation. The GPU can't keep up. The frame rate drops. The phone overheats. The app crashes.
A simpler game (fewer animations, basic graphics) might work on an older phone. A complex game (3D effects, particle animations) will not.
What You Can Do
Upgrade your phone. This is the simple answer and the one most casinos implicitly assume.
Clear your phone's cache. Sometimes old cache files from previous app versions interfere with new installations. A fresh install might work even on older hardware.
Close other apps. Your phone has limited RAM. If you're running five apps in the background and try to launch a casino game, the phone might not have enough memory.
Play in landscape mode. Some phones have slightly better performance in certain orientations due to how the GPU allocates resources.
Use a different device. If you have access to a tablet or newer phone, try there.
The Business Question
Why don't casinos support older phones? Two reasons.
First: the cost of supporting older devices is high. You have to test on multiple hardware configurations. You have to maintain multiple code paths. You have to debug on devices that are slow and hard to work with.
Second: the number of players on very old phones is small. Most players upgrade within 3-4 years. A phone from 2019 is ancient in mobile terms. The investment to support it isn't justified by the player count.
So casinos make a choice: optimize for 2024 hardware, or compromise performance for everyone to support 2019 hardware. They choose the former.
It's not unreasonable. But it does mean older phones get left behind.
