Edge sorting is a technique employed by advantage players to identify cards before they are revealed during play. The mechanism operates as follows: playing cards manufactured at scale have minor variations in their edge finish. The variation arises from equipment wear, machine calibration, and production tolerances. A card trimmed on Tuesday may have a slightly different edge profile than a card trimmed on Wednesday. These variations are not visible to the casual observer. They are visible to a player who is looking for them.
The cards used in baccarat are printed on both sides. The design of the back of the card is consistent across all fifty-two cards in a deck. However, certain cards will have a marginally wider edge, or a marginally different curve along the edge, due to manufacturing variation. An advantage player photographs the cards during the shoe and catalogs the edge variations. Thereafter, by observing whether a card entering play has a "wide" or "narrow" edge, the player can determine its identity with significant probability. A banker ten (which loses to a player natural nine) and a banker seven (which wins against a player six) have different edge profiles. The player sees the edge and knows which card is coming.
This technique made headlines in two thousand and twelve when a high-stakes baccarat player at the Borgata in Atlantic City employed edge sorting with the collusion of a dealer. The casino sued. The player counter-sued. The case proceeded through New Jersey courts for years. The central legal question was whether edge sorting constitutes cheating under the law, or whether it is permissible advantage play (analogous to card counting in blackjack, which is legal).
The Legal and Regulatory Context
The distinction between cheating and advantage play is jurisdictional and, frankly, somewhat arbitrary. Card counting is legal in Nevada. Card counting is prosecutable in some other states. Why. Because Nevada determined that counting cards is observation, not cheating. A player using their mind to track information is not introducing something external to the game. Edge sorting, by contrast, requires preparation. The player must photograph the cards. The player must catalog the variations. The player must then use that information during play. This introduces a preparatory element that card counting does not.
Most casinos now address edge sorting through procedural controls. Cards are inspected for edge variance before use. Cards suspected of edge-sorting vulnerability are destroyed. The shoe is rotated so that cards cannot be positioned consistently. Additionally, dealers now orient cards randomly during shuffle, preventing a player from mapping edge variations across the shoe.
Regulators in various jurisdictions have addressed edge sorting explicitly in their guidance. The Malta Gaming Authority explicitly prohibits edge sorting in its operational guidelines. The UK Gambling Commission considers it a form of cheating. Accordingly, operators licensed under these regimes prohibit the practice contractually and terminate accounts of players caught engaging in it. No monetary recovery is pursued, but the player is barred from future play.
The technical reason edge sorting has declined is that manufacturing has improved. Modern card production tolerances are tighter. Edge variance between cards in a modern deck is minimal. Furthermore, operators mix cards from different manufacturing batches in the same shoe, rendering edge-sorting catalogs ineffective. A player who has photographed cards from Deck A cannot apply that knowledge to Deck B because the variance profiles do not align.
Edge sorting remains theoretically possible but operationally impractical in contemporary casinos. The case from Atlantic City established a legal precedent in New Jersey that edge sorting is not permissible advantage play. That precedent does not extend to other jurisdictions, but regulatory bodies have generally adopted the same stance. Accordingly, edge sorting is best understood as a historical technique that is no longer effective due to production improvements and procedural countermeasures.
