Double Chance 12: How the Home-or-Away Bet Settles
A double chance 12 slip wins if either team wins and loses only on a draw. How it settles, what extra time and abandoned games do, and when it beats DNB.
Double chance 12 is a bet that either team wins the match. If the home side wins, you win. If the away side wins, you also win. The slip loses on one result only: a draw at the end of regular time.
That is the whole market in one line. The parts that catch Nigerian punters out are the details around it: what counts as "the end of the match", what happens when a game is stopped, and whether a 12 pick is better value than backing one team with draw no bet.
What is double chance 12 in betting?
A double chance selection covers two of the three possible full-time results, and the 12 option covers the two that are not a draw. Think of a Saturday NPFL fixture like Enyimba against Kano Pillars: pick 12 and you are saying somebody will win, you just do not care who.
Bookmakers list double chance right beside the three-way To Win market (the market Nigerian slips show as 1X2, where 1 is home, X is draw and 2 is away). Double chance simply joins two of those outcomes into one selection. That is why the codes look the way they do:
| Double chance option | Wins if | Loses if |
|---|---|---|
| 1X | Home win or draw | Away win |
| X2 | Draw or away win | Home win |
| 12 | Home win or away win | Draw |
So when someone asks what 1X or X2 means on a booking code, the answer is the same idea: two outcomes in, one outcome out. With 12, the outcome left out is the draw.
When does a double chance 12 slip settle?
Double chance is graded on the result after regular time, not on who goes through. Operator rules state that bets settle on the official result of regular time, and that goals scored in extra time are not counted.
Regular time has a precise meaning in those rules: 90 minutes plus referee stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalty shoot-outs. Another operator's sportsbook rules say the same thing in fewer words: the double chance market is resulted at the end of regular time.
This matters most in knockout football. Picture a Super Eagles knockout tie at the Africa Cup of Nations that is level when the referee blows after stoppage time. Nigeria might win in extra time or on penalties and progress, but a 12 slip on that match has already lost, because the regular-time result was a draw. If you want to back a team to qualify, that is a different market with its own rules.
Interrupted, shortened and abandoned matches
The settlement rules also cover games that do not run normally, and these are the cases tipster pages almost never explain.
- Abandoned before full time. If the match has kicked off but is abandoned before regular time ends, the double chance market is resulted as void at that operator.
- Interrupted and resumed later. One operator's football rules give a 12-hour completion window: if an interrupted match is not completed within 12 hours of its originally scheduled start time, bets on markets not yet decided are affected by the void rule. A floodlight failure or a pitch invasion at an NPFL ground can push a game into this situation.
- Odd match formats. Where a match is played in a changed format, such as three halves of 30 minutes, the same rules settle bets on the full match because the overall match length is still 90 minutes.
Rules differ between bookmakers, so read the settlement page of the operator you actually use before staking on a match that looks likely to be disrupted.
How the price of a 12 selection is set
A 12 price is always shorter than the price of either team on its own, because it covers two results instead of one. The bookmaker builds it from the same probabilities it uses for the three-way market and then adds its margin, the built-in edge that means the odds on all outcomes together promise slightly less than a fair book.
In practice the 12 price tells you how likely the bookmaker thinks a draw is. In a Premier League game where Arsenal are heavy favourites at home, the 12 price will sit only a little below Arsenal's own price, because the draw is the main risk either way. In a tight NPFL derby where draws are common, 12 can look generous, but that is only because the draw is a real threat.
12 double chance or draw no bet?
Draw no bet refunds your stake on a draw; a 12 selection loses it. In exchange, 12 lets you win with either team, while draw no bet only pays if the one team you picked wins.
| Result | 12 double chance | Draw no bet (home team) |
|---|---|---|
| Home win | Win | Win |
| Draw | Lose | Stake refunded |
| Away win | Win | Lose |
A 12 pick suits a match you expect to be open, with both sides attacking and a draw unlikely. Draw no bet suits a match where you trust one side but fear a stalemate. Neither market guarantees a return, and neither turns a weak read of a match into a good one.
Who sets the rules for Nigerian bookmakers
Betting regulation in Nigeria now sits with the states. On 22 November 2024 the Supreme Court held betting and gaming to be residual matters for state governments, which invalidated the federal licensing framework under the National Lottery Act 2005. For a punter the practical point is simple: market rules such as double chance settlement come from each operator's own terms, so check them on the site where you place the slip.
Punters ask
What does double chance 12 mean?
It means you are backing either team to win. Home win pays, away win pays, and only a draw at the end of regular time loses the slip.
Can you lose a double chance bet?
Yes. Every double chance option still leaves one result uncovered. On a 12 selection that result is the draw, and a match level after regular time loses even if one side goes on to win in extra time or on penalties.
What is the meaning of X2?
X2 is the double chance option that covers a draw or an away win. It loses only if the home side wins.
Does double chance include extra time?
No. Double chance is settled on the regular-time result, which is the full match plus stoppage time, and goals scored in extra time do not count.
